We remind you that independent interpretation of the results is unacceptable, the information provided below is for reference purposes only.

Phosphorus (P) in overnight urine is a laboratory test used to assess the amount of phosphorus excreted in the urine during the night. Phosphorus is an essential mineral involved in the formation and maintenance of bone tissue, energy metabolism, and numerous cellular processes.

Urinary phosphorus measurement provides information about renal phosphate excretion and may contribute to the assessment of phosphorus metabolism and calcium-phosphorus balance in certain clinical situations.

Indications

  • assessment of phosphorus metabolism and calcium-phosphorus balance;
  • assessment of renal phosphorus excretion;
  • investigation of mineral metabolism disorders;
  • evaluation of bone disorders associated with changes in phosphorus metabolism;
  • assessment of kidney function in certain clinical situations;
  • monitoring of patients with mineral metabolism disorders, as recommended by a physician;
  • monitoring of the response to certain treatments, as recommended by a physician;
  • other clinical situations, as recommended by a physician.

Procedure

The test is performed using a urine sample collected overnight, according to the laboratory’s instructions. The amount of phosphorus excreted in the urine during the collection period is determined in the laboratory.

IMPORTANT!

It is crucial to remember that the information provided in this section is not intended for self-diagnosis or self-treatment. If you experience any symptoms or a flare-up of a condition, it is essential to consult a qualified medical professional for diagnostic tests and appropriate treatment. Only a qualified specialist can make an accurate diagnosis and determine the proper course of treatment. To obtain the most accurate and consistent evaluation of test results, it is recommended to have them performed at the same laboratory. This is because different laboratories may use different methods and units of measurement for similar tests.

Preparation:

  • following the laboratory’s instructions regarding overnight urine collection;
  • following the physician’s recommendations regarding food and fluid intake during the collection period;
  • informing the physician about the medications and supplements being taken, particularly those that may affect mineral metabolism;
  • do not discontinue any medications or supplements without the physician’s recommendation;
  • additional recommendations may be provided by the physician depending on the indication for the examination.
