Tomatoes
Tomato Allergen (Solanum lycopersicum) - belongs to the group of plant-derived food allergens. In sensitive individuals, proteins found in tomatoes may trigger an immune system reaction after consuming fresh tomatoes or tomato-based products.
Tomato allergy may present with itching or burning in the mouth, skin rashes, redness of the skin, as well as respiratory or digestive symptoms. In some cases, cross-reactivity with certain pollen allergens may occur.
This test detects specific IgE antibodies to tomato allergens and helps identify hypersensitivity to this food product.
Indications
The test is recommended in cases of:
- skin reactions after consuming tomatoes or tomato-based products
- itching or burning in the mouth after eating fruits or vegetables
- swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat after eating
- symptoms of food allergy (rash, itching, hives)
- suspected cross-reactivity with pollen allergens
Procedure
- For the test, a venous blood sample is collected from the elbow vein.
- The blood is placed in a laboratory tube and analyzed for the presence of specific IgE antibodies to the tomato allergen.
- The results indicate whether the body has an increased sensitivity to this food.
- Blood collection takes only a few minutes and is nearly painless, and the information obtained helps the doctor assess the risk of an allergic reaction and provide guidance on diet and lifestyle.
Pregătirea:
• fast for 8–12 hours before blood sampling
• avoid intense physical activity for 24 hours before the test
• avoid alcohol the day before testing
• inform your doctor about any medications being taken
