Bleeding time (Duke method)

Bleeding Time (Duke Method) is an orientational test for the assessment of primary hemostasis that measures the time required for a standardized capillary bleeding to stop. The test provides indirect information about platelet function and the integrity of the mechanisms involved in primary hemostasis.
The result may be influenced by platelet count and function, the integrity of small blood vessels, as well as certain medications or medical conditions that affect hemostasis.
Indications
- orientational assessment of primary hemostasis;
- investigation of bleeding or bruising of unclear origin;
- suspected platelet function disorders;
- evaluation of patients with a history of prolonged bleeding;
- monitoring, as recommended by a physician, of conditions that may affect primary hemostasis.
Procedure
The test is performed by making a small puncture in the earlobe, followed by measuring the time required for the bleeding to stop. The procedure is performed according to the standardized Duke method.
