Mycoplasma hominis (DNA, qualitative, swab) - men

Mycoplasma hominis is a bacterium from the class Mollicutes, one of the smallest self-replicating organisms with a minimal genome. It may be part of the urogenital microbiota as an opportunistic microorganism.

It lacks a rigid cell wall, being surrounded only by a plasma membrane, and is capable of changing shape and interacting with host cells.

In men, it may be present as part of the opportunistic flora but under certain conditions is associated with:

  • urethritis
  • urogenital tract inflammation
  • reproductive dysfunction

Indications

  • urethral discharge
  • burning or pain during urination
  • urethral discomfort
  • inflammatory urogenital tract infections (urethritis)
  • urogenital system disorders
  • infertility evaluation
  • preparation for urological procedures
  • suspected sexually transmitted infection
  • treatment monitoring

Procedure

  • sample collection is performed in a medical setting
  • urethral swab is taken
  • sterile single-use instrument is used
  • procedure takes a few minutes
  • mild temporary discomfort may occur

  • PCR (polymerase chain reaction)
  • detection of Mycoplasma hominis DNA

Preparation:

  • abstain from sexual intercourse for 3–4 days

  • avoid topical medications before testing
  • avoid intimate hygiene immediately before sampling
