Ultrasound examination of the abdomen and kidneys in children aged 1 year
Ultrasound examination of the abdominal organs and kidneys is a non-invasive, painless and safe imaging method used to assess the abdominal organs and structures in children.
The examination uses ultrasound waves to visualize the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys and urinary bladder, as well as to assess their size, structure and appearance.
Ultrasound may help identify structural changes, masses, stones, cysts, signs of inflammation and other abnormalities that may require further medical evaluation.
Indications
Ultrasound examination may be recommended in cases of:
- abdominal pain or discomfort;
- persistent bloating, nausea or vomiting;
- changes in bowel habits;
- changes in urination or painful urination;
- lower back or abdominal pain;
- recurrent urinary tract infections;
- abnormal blood or urine test results requiring further investigation;
- suspected diseases of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen or kidneys;
- monitoring of previously diagnosed conditions;
- evaluation of abnormalities identified during other investigations;
- other indications, as recommended by a physician.
Procedure
The child is positioned on the examination table, usually lying on their back and, when necessary, on their side.
The physician applies a special gel to the abdominal area and gently moves the ultrasound transducer over the skin. Depending on the area being examined and the child's age, the physician may ask the child to change position or take a breath in and out.
The examination usually takes approximately 15–30 minutes, depending on the child's age, the purpose of the examination and individual circumstances.
Ultrasound does not use ionizing radiation and, as a rule, does not cause pain or significant discomfort.
Limitations
The quality of the examination may be affected by intestinal gas, bowel contents or the child's ability to remain in the required position during the examination.
Depending on the findings, the physician may recommend additional investigations to clarify the diagnosis.
Ultrasound findings should be interpreted in the context of the child's symptoms, clinical examination and the results of other investigations, when available.
Contraindications
Ultrasound examination of the abdominal organs and kidneys has no absolute contraindications and can be performed in children of any age.
In cases of acute conditions or a general state requiring urgent medical attention, the examination is performed according to the physician's recommendation.
Preparation:
The examination is recommended to be performed on an empty stomach. For a child aged 1 year, it is recommended to avoid food and milk for approximately 4 hours before the examination. Small amounts of water may be consumed if there are no other medical recommendations.
In cases of conditions that do not allow fasting, preparation is determined individually according to the physician's recommendation.
For optimal assessment of the kidneys and urinary bladder, the physician may also recommend a specific fluid intake regimen before the examination, depending on the child's age and the purpose of the examination.
