Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a Gram-negative bacterium, the causative agent of gonorrhea (gonococcal infection), a sexually transmitted infection.

The PCR test for Neisseria gonorrhoeae DNA detects the genetic material of the pathogen in a biological sample and confirms the presence of infection, including asymptomatic forms.

Indications

  • urethral discharge
  • burning or pain during urination
  • redness or discomfort in the urethral area
  • suspected sexually transmitted infection
  • screening in the presence of risk factors
  • evaluation of sexual partners of infected patients
  • monitoring treatment effectiveness after antibiotic therapy

Procedure

  • sample collection is performed in a medical setting
  • a urethral swab is taken
  • a sterile single-use instrument is used
  • if necessary, samples from other sites may be collected according to medical indication
  • mild, short-term discomfort may occur

Preparation:

  • avoid antibiotics for 2–3 weeks if possible
  • avoid topical antiseptics for 2–3 days
  • avoid urination for 1. 5–2 hours before sampling
  • abstain from sexual intercourse for 48–72 hours
  • avoid intimate hygiene immediately before sample collection
