The Healthy Skin, Hair & Nails Profile – Extended is a comprehensive laboratory test panel designed to provide a more in-depth assessment of the internal factors that may affect the health and appearance of the skin, hair, and nails.

In addition to evaluating iron status, vitamin D, and essential trace elements, this profile assesses thyroid function, protein status, and key vitamins involved in healthy hair growth, nail strength, and skin regeneration.

It is particularly recommended for individuals experiencing persistent hair loss, brittle nails, chronic fatigue, or insufficient improvement despite dietary changes or nutritional supplementation.

Key indicators of internal skin, hair, and nail health

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC) without ESR — helps identify signs of anemia and hidden inflammatory processes that may contribute to hair loss, fatigue, and deterioration of the skin and nails
  • Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) — evaluates thyroid function; thyroid disorders are commonly associated with hair loss, dry skin, brittle nails, and slower hair growth
  • Vitamin D (25-OH Vitamin D) — supports normal hair follicle function and skin renewal; deficiency is frequently associated with diffuse hair loss and dry skin
  • Ferritin — reflects the body's iron stores; low ferritin levels are commonly associated with hair loss, hair thinning, and brittle nails
  • Iron (Fe) — is essential for oxygen transport to tissues; deficiency may contribute to dull-looking skin, weakened hair, and reduced hair growth
  • Total Serum Calcium — plays a role in cellular renewal and indirectly contributes to nail strength and healthy skin
  • Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin) — is essential for cell division and red blood cell production; deficiency may be associated with hair loss, dry skin, and fatigue
  • Folate (Folic Acid) — supports cell renewal and tissue growth; deficiency may affect hair growth and skin regeneration
  • Total Protein — reflects the body's overall protein status; inadequate protein levels may contribute to weak hair and fragile nails
  • Albumin — the main transport protein in the blood; low levels may indicate nutritional deficiencies that can affect the quality of the skin and hair
  • Zinc (Zn) — an essential trace element required for cell division and tissue repair; deficiency is commonly associated with brittle nails, hair loss, and dry skin

Indications

This profile is recommended for individuals with:

  • persistent or excessive hair loss
  • brittle, thin, or splitting nails
  • dry, flaky, or dull-looking skin
  • chronic fatigue or reduced energy levels
  • suspected vitamin, mineral, or trace element deficiencies
  • suspected thyroid dysfunction
  • unbalanced nutrition or restrictive diets
  • insufficient improvement after basic nutritional supplementation
  • recovery following stress, illness, pregnancy, or childbirth

Procedure

A blood sample is collected from a vein using standard venipuncture. The procedure takes only a few minutes and requires no special preparation at the laboratory.

The sample is analyzed according to the tests included in the profile.

Contraindications

There are no absolute contraindications to this laboratory test.

Relative limitations include:

  • severe acute infections
  • significant dehydration
  • inability to obtain venous access
  • recent major blood loss (as determined by a physician)

Limitations

The results of this profile are not diagnostic and must be interpreted by a physician in the context of the patient's medical history and clinical findings.

Laboratory values may be influenced by inflammatory conditions, medications, and physiological states such as pregnancy or the menstrual cycle.

The identification of nutritional deficiencies or hormonal imbalances requires medical evaluation and individualized management.

Preparation:

  • fast for 8–12 hours before blood collection (water is allowed)
  • drink plain water as usual
  • avoid alcohol and strenuous physical activity for 24 hours before testing
  • if possible and after consulting your physician, avoid taking iron, zinc, vitamin D, and vitamin B12 supplements before the test
  • morning blood collection is recommended
